Sold out crowd attends formal but tacky ball
By Heather M. Smith, hsmith@acnpapers.com
The Highland Village Rotary hosted its 1st Annual Formal But Tacky Ball for a sold-out crowd Friday night
The event was held at Royal Affairs Ballroom in Old Town Lewisville. It benefited two organizations, Cleaning for a Reason and Bridge Breast Network, which both serve local women who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
“It was really exciting that we had a sold-out event,” said Angela Kreig, public relations committee chairwoman. “We had people calling the day of the event wanting tickets. We were really pleased. We knew it was for a good cause and knew that people in the community would want to help out.”
“Breast Cancer has forced me to take a strong look at what life means to me and what I need to be doing along with how precious life truly is,” Burks said. “Cancer has been a blessing to me in that I have been shown God's hands and feet through the many family members and wonderful friends that have graced me and my family with unimaginable love and support.”
Burks said she is a strong supporter of organizations that benefit breast cancer research.
“I believe that every effort made such as the Formal But Tacky Ball, no matter how large or small, can and will make a difference to another,” Burks said. “We all should try to find what gifts we have been given and share those with others to lift them up.”
The Formal But Tacky Ball featured the “Bras for a Cause” auction, a live auction and a silent auction. The bras auction featured bras decorated by local artists and designers. The highest selling bra went for $475.
“We weren’t really sure how the bra auction would go, but we were pleased and surprised by the turnout of it,” Kreig said. “Prior to the auction, we played a short video on the benefiting organizations that made it real for people.”
During the live auction, one item sold for more than $1,000. The item was a dinner for eight with Chef Morris Salerno of The Grotto restaurant in Highland Village and Dianne Costa, mayor of Highland Village
“That was a hot auction item,” Kreig said. “Both Morris and Dianne got on stage and used the microphone to encourage people to bid on their item.”
In order to pull off the theme of “formal, but tacky,” the rotary club chose a formal venue and hosted a formal dinner. Attendees then wore “tacky” clothing including boxer shorts with suit jackets, fashions from the 1980s, and elegant evening gowns with baseball hats. The rotary club also decorated the venue with “tacky” décor.
“People really had fun with the theme,” Kreig said. “Next year will be bigger and better. Before the event even took place, we had it in our heads that we would do this next year. We’re already thinking ahead to the future, and because of the success of this event, we’re even more excited about it.”
