Denton County reports H1N1 death
By Heather M. Smith, Hsmith@acnpapers.com
Denton County experienced its first H1N1 related death on Wednesday.
A 49-year-old Lewisville woman died from the H1N1 virus. According to the Denton County Health Department, she had underlying health conditions as well.
“We were made aware of her death,” said Bing Burton, director of the health department. “To put this in perspective, Denton County averages 55 deaths per year from the seasonal flu virus.”
“As we track school districts and their absence rates, we are noticing that the number of absences are down,” Burton said.
Denton County received 1,400 doses of the H1N1 vaccine and almost all of it has been administered. Burton said another shipment of the vaccine should be arriving in Denton County in two weeks.
“We will continue to target high-risk people with the vaccine,” Burton said.
The high-risk group includes pregnant women, children and the elderly.
“We encourage everyone to exercise all precautions when it comes to this virus,” Burton said.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, to stay healthy people should get vaccinated, cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the trash after using it, wash hands often with soap and water, avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth, stay home if sick. Finally, the CDC recommends that people follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.
