Gary Burns Fun Run Saturday at Frisco Square
By Jane Whitledge, Special Contributor
Runner’s On Your Mark, Get Set, for the 10th annual Gary Burns Fun Run at Frisco Square benefiting Frisco Education Foundation.
This year marks the 10th year of the fun run, which will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday. The race includes a 5K U.S.A Track and Field Certified Race and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk. All 5K participants will be timed by a chip located in their bib that must be re-located properly on their shoe. Participants in the 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk are not timed and therefore will not have a chip, according to Randi Davis, Event Specialist for FISD and Frisco Education.
The Gary Burns Fun Run is the major annual fundraiser for Frisco Education Foundation. It is named in honor of the late Assistant Fire Chief Gary Burns.
The event offers the fun run, the certified race, entertainment for all ages, a children’s area and the ever popular Frisco Fire Clowns.
“We have given out more than $700,000 in Gary Burns Memorial Scholarships to FISD students thanks to the Gary Burns Fun Run,” said Allison Miller, director of the Frisco Education Foundation.
“Great strides have been made toward improving the future of FISD students during the past 10 years. Gary Burns would have taken pride in having something that benefits Frisco ISD students done in his name.”
During the recent economic downturn many not-for-profit groups have suffered. Miller admits she had expressed some concern about sponsorship this year, but many individuals and companies stepped up to ensure the 10th anniversary race goes forward.
