Thank you very mulch
By Staff reports
Halloween has come and gone, readying the Plano community for the upcoming autumn and holiday festivities.
Decorations get stored away, trick-or-treat candy gets eaten and costumes get donated, but what about the intricately carved jack-o-lantern sitting on the front porch?
Instead of leaving the gutted pumpkins to rot, Plano's Sustainability and Environmental Services division suggests composting the gourds along with other biodegradable yard trimmings.
The pumpkins, as well as corrugated cardboard and other yard trimmings - including grass clippings, brush, tree trimmings and other yard debris - will be processed at the 121 Regional Composting Facility located at the North Texas Municipal Water District's landfill in Melissa, Texas. Once processed, the material is bagged and sold as Texas Pure compost, top-dressing, soil blend and wood mulch.
The biodegradable paper collection bags are available at local retail stores. Bags may also be purchased at the following city locations: City Warehouse and Custer Road Transfer Station.
The city of Plano diverts 100 percent of its collected yard trimmings and corrugated cardboard from the landfill.
