Coppell ISD to sponsor internet safety, cyber bullying program

Published: Tuesday, November 3, 2009 1:03 PM CST
Special FBI agent Aaron Covey of the bureau’s Dallas division will present a program on Internet safety and cyber bullying from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Coppell High School lecture hall.

Hosted by the Cottonwood Creek PTO, the program is designed to inform parents about what they need to know about today’s online world.

“This program is essential for parents with children of any age, from young adults who are surfing experts to toddlers not yet active on computers,” said Gene Liese, Cottonwood Creek Elementary PTO public relations director.

This is not a presentation suitable for children, according to Liese, so parents are asked to arrange for child care.

Covey, who has worked with the FBI’s Denver cyber squad since 2004, investigates Internet crimes against children. Currently he is the coordinator for the Dallas Division Infragard program, a partnership between the FBI and the private sector.

Covey will cover the following topics during the presentation: the common signs your child might be at risk online, what steps to take to minimize the chances of online danger, what to do if you have suspicions about the person with whom your child is communicating online, and what to do if your child has received an e-mail advertizing for an inappropriate Web site.
