Dallas Stars spend day at Craig Ranch

Published: Tuesday, November 3, 2009 10:19 PM CST
The Dallas Stars took time Monday to shred the ice and greens of Craig Ranch in McKinney, as the team spent a morning’s worth of practice at the Dr. Pepper StarCenter before trading pads for khakis and pairing with local golfers for the annual Dallas Stars Dr. Pepper Golf Classic, a fundraising event benefiting the Dallas Stars Foundation, held for the second consecutive year at TPC Craig Ranch.

Money raised by the Dallas Stars Foundation awards scholarships, including the Bob Gainey Honorary Scholarship and Hockey and Figure Skating Scholarships, and grants to local children’s charities and students. Among the grant recipients for 2008 were Collin County Children’s Advocacy Center and the Arc of Dallas.

Participants in the golf classic were divided into groups of four that included a Stars celebrity such as a player, coach, executive or broadcaster. Stars color commentator Daryl Reaugh considered his the most fortunate group on the course.

“I don’t know what they paid to play with me, because usually there’s some kind of an auction that goes on and I’m usually one of the more popular ones,” he said. “I think they paid 10s of dollars to play with me today.”

Reaugh also thought highly of his team’s chances of winning the event, given his golfing ability.

“I am tremendous,” he said. “I probably will [win], but I’ll give it back, because that’s what I do: I give back.”

Paired with Reaugh was Dick Frazar, Dallas Stars fan and father of PGA Tour pro Harrison Frazar. More humble than his teammate, Frazar made it clear golfing talent isn’t acquired genetically. He said he was a terrible golfer and hadn’t beaten his son since he was 10-years-old. Still, he enjoys the sport.

“[Harrison] gave up trying to help me a long time ago,” Frazar said.

Those golfers looking for an extra edge could spend $100 on a ticket that granted them a mulligan and the chance to win several prize drawings with prizes that included a trip to Europe courtesy of American Airlines and a seat among the Stars on a pair of away-game road trips. For the grand prize winner, though, temporary membership on the team may mean recounting a day of golf with guys who outperformed him.

“Happy Gilmore” is apparently based in fact.

“[The Stars are] really good, because apparently the hockey translates really well to golf, and these guys are just unbelievable athletes,” said Carla Rosenberg, Executive Director of the Dallas Stars Foundation. “I think besides hockey, their next favorite sport is golf for most of them, so it’s a fun day for them.”

Alongside shooting for the lowest score, golfers could test their skills at various challenges held on individual holes, including a pair of hole-in-one tests that could turn a lucky shot into a brand-new BMW. Members of the overall first place team received a jersey autographed by Stars team captain Brenden Morrow. Prizes were awarded at a post-tournament dinner featuring golf commentator David Feherty as the key-note speaker.

On the course, tournament participants had the chance to shoot and talk the day away with their celebrity partners, and those paired with Stars head coach Marc Crawford even got a little business done in the downtime. Crawford said that handling a team full of top-caliber athletes shares comparison with what many companies go through.

“We share with them some of the issues we have with our team that are similar to some of the issues they’re having at their workplace,” Crawford said. “Dealing with people is universal. In any business you’re dealing with people, trying to get the most out of people, trying to motivate people, trying to organize people.”
