Broadway comes to Coppell for one more week

Published: Friday, November 6, 2009 2:51 PM CST
The Coppell High School drama department has brought Broadway to Coppell with the musical “Anything Goes.”

A cast of 41 sings and dances its way across the stage bringing Cole Porter’s music to life during almost three hours of entertainment.

The cast is headed by Mackenzie Orr as Billy Crooker, Dinah Smith as Reno Sweeney, Whitney Norman as Hope Harcourt and Jacob Harpel as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh.

The four have strong voices and great stage presence.

Dinah’s “I Get a Kick Out of You” is an opportunity to really show off her voice. She and Mackenzie do the same in their duet “Easy to Love.”

“My favorite song in the show is ‘Blow Gabriel Blow.’ I love it,” Dinah said.

Mackenzie has a strong stage presence as he tries to win Hope’s love.

Whitney plays the confused woman torn between two men. Her voice is excellent, and the duet “It’s De-lovely” with Mackenzie is very well done.

Jacob, the original love interest, provides some great comical moments, especially when he sings “The Gypsy in Me” in the second act.

With all the strong talent on the stage the show is stolen by Taylor Vowell as Erma and Jake McCready as Moonface Martin, public enemy number 13.

The duo plays a gangster and his moll from Brooklyn. Taylor’s accent and portrayal brings steady laughs from the audience.

“I plan on a career in the theater world,” Taylor said.

Her partner in crime plays his part with a hint of Peter Falk, and the pair is perfectly cast for the play.

Jake has several good songs including “Friendship,” which he does with Dinah and “Be Like a Bluebird,” a solo while in the brig.

Taylor gets to show off her voice in the second act with “Buddie Beware.”

“Anything Goes” will have three more performances before closing on Nov. 8.

The last three performances are at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6-8 at the Coppell High School Auditorium. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students.
