City gears up for Veterans Day activities

By BLAINE CRIMMINS, Staff writer
Billed as the biggest Veterans Day celebration in the Metroplex, the City of The Colony will honor its veterans community on Saturday, Nov. 7, during “American Heroes: A Salute to Veterans,” at Stewart Creek Park, 3700 Sparks Rd.
The event features the only Veterans Day fireworks show in North Texas, as well as a car, truck, and bike show, live music, and other festivities.
The program begins at 6:30 a.m. with registration for the 1-mile run/walk, 10K run, and 5K run/walk at Ethridge Elementary School, 6001 Ethridge Dr.
The Colony American Legion Post No. 21, the local Masonic Lodge, and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department will present a ceremony titled, “Honor and Remember,” at 11 a.m. at the Five Star Veterans Memorial, 4100 Blair Oaks Dr.
“American Heroes” kicks off at 2 p.m. at Stewart Creek with the car show, the Kids Zone, a sponsor expo, and more. Live music by “Escape: The Journey Tribute” will hit the stage at 4 p.m.
A veterans ceremony featuring the national anthem, posting of the colors, and recognition for veterans will begin at 6 p.m.
Ronnie “R.D.” Foster will be the program’s keynote speaker. Born on a cotton farm in Farmersville, Foster graduated McKinney High School in 1966. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and served in the Vietnam War.
He is a musician and songwriter, and has written numerous newspaper and magazine articles and three books on the subject of Vietnam. “One Day as a Lion,” his second book, is an account of 21 young heroes from his home of Collin County who were killed in Vietnam.
In 2004, Foster initiated a grass-roots movement to build a Collin County Veterans Memorial in McKinney, which is nearing completion.
The Parks and Recreation Department is soliciting photos of local veterans to be displayed during the American Heroes Ceremony. Participants may e-mail pictures to events@tcpard.com, and are asked to include the veteran's name, branch, service dates and location where the photo was taken, if possible. Photos taken during the veteran's actual service time are preferred. The deadline for photo submissions is Nov. 2.
Following the ceremony, the American Heroes Fireworks show is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The following week, veterans of The Colony are invited to join the Veterans Day ceremony at Ethridge Elementary School where veterans will be recognized at an 8 a.m. service Wednesday, Nov. 11, in front of the school flag pole.
