Around Frisco: art, author, ballet and parade

Art in Atrium opens Monday


The City of Frisco will display two dimensional works of art by artist or arts organizations from Frisco and the surrounding area for the Art in the Atrium series starting Monday at City Hall . A reception will be held on 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

This exhibition is part of the city's ongoing exhibition program series to showcase regional artistic endeavors and to encourage public dialogue, understanding and enjoyment of visual art. The program’s goal is to reflect the artistic excellence in and around Frisco and to promote the city's cultural and economic initiatives.

The 2009 Art in the Atrium Exhibition continues through Aug. 27, 2010.

Sign ordinance input sought

The City of Frisco will host the second of two meetings 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday to seek public input regarding the city’s sign ordinance in the Vivian McCallum Room, 4th fl., George A. Purefoy Municipal Center, 6101 Frisco Square Blvd.

The meetings will have follow a casual, “come-and-go” format. Staff will be present to take comments. Staff encourages residents and businesses owners to share their input by attending a meeting or e-mailing comments or recommendations to Greg Carr, code enforcement/animal control administrator, at gcarr@friscotexas.gov.

NYT best-selling author arrives Thursday

Sandra Brown, author of 58 New York Times bestsellers, will appear at two events sponsored by the Friends of the Frisco Public Library, starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the George A Purefoy Municipal Center, 1601 Frisco Square Blvd, 5th floor City Room.

In addition to the public event, tickets are also available for a meet-and greet reception with fans, and a presentation by Brown on her two latest books, “Smash Cut” and “Rainwater,” at 7:30 p.m. in Frisco city council chambers. Books will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation.

Tickets are $20 for Brown’s presentation and book signing in city council chambers and $35 for both the meet-and-greet reception and the presentation and book signing. Tickets can be purchased at Frisco Public Library, first-floor circulation desk or online at http://www.friscolibrary.com

College Honors

The following former Frisco students have graduated from Excelsior College: Enrique Salgado, Jr., Bachelor of Science; and Jene A. Harrell, Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Community Parade honors veterans Saturday

Organizations from throughout Frisco are designing floats and the school bands are getting out their best march music for the annual Frisco Community Parade scheduled for 11 a.m. Nov. 14. The parade starts at Pizza Hut Park and Frisco Square before proceeding on Main Street. The object of the parade is to express the community’s thanks to the men and women who serve in the military. Parade float prizes carry scholarship dollars from the Frisco Education Foundation and registration is required at least three days prior to the Nov. 14 event. The Main Street Merchants Association is hosting a Faire 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the corner of Main Street and Fourth Street, behind the Gazebo and Clock. The Faire will feature a live remote from KLAK from 11 a.m. to 1 pm, and a special performance from the School of Rock Stars.

Garden Club changes meeting schedule

The Frisco Garden Club will meet starting at 10:30 a.m. on the third Tuesday of the month. The next meeting is Nov. 17. Lunch is $15 per person, open to people interested in joining, and requires RSVP at least 48 hours prior to the lunch to fjustus972@sbcglobal.net.

“Nutcracker” ballet Saturday

The Frisco Ballet’s 2009 production of “The Nutcracker,” a holiday delight for children and families of all ages, is scheduled for Saturday at Heritage High School.

Two performances are available at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.  Tickets are available for purchase at  Sheena’s Dance Academy, 7975 Stonebrook Pkwy in Frisco or by calling  The Frisco Ballet at (972) 731-0361. 

The Frisco Ballet, a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization, was established in 1999 by company  executive/artistic director Sheena Laramore.  The ballet company’s annual Nutcracker productions bring the joy and beauty of classical ballet to Frisco.  In addition to “The Nutcracker,” The  Frisco Ballet has also performed such ballet favorites as “Cinderella,” “Coppelia,”  “Swan Lake,” “A Holiday Extravaganza,” and “Giselle.”

Military News

Two Frisco youths are back in port in California.

Navy Airman Darius J. Norwood, son of Paulette and Leonard A. Hill of Frisco, and Navy Seaman Apprentice Scott W. Blubaugh, son of Mark Blubaugh of Frisco and Elaine Edwards of Lewisville, recently returned with more than 5, 000 fellow sailors and Marines aboard the Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), San Diego, Calif., from a five-month deployment to the U.S. 5th Fleet and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility

Ronald Reagan's sailors participated in 50 community relations projects during port visits to Singapore, Dubai, the United Arab Emirates and Phuket, Thailand.

         Norwood is a 2006 graduate of Frisco High School and joined the Navy in February 2009.  Blubaugh is a 2005 graduate of Lewisville High School and joined the Navy in May 2008.

Frisco blanketeers donate 16 blankets

Sixteen beautiful, handcrafted blankets were recently delivered by Project Linus Blanketeer Regina Forthman of the Collin County Chapter to Home Hospice in Grayson County for this year’s Camp Dragonfly. Project Linus is a non-profit organization that strives to provide a sense of security and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or in dire need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, created by volunteers called “blanketeers.” They meet regularly at the Frisco Public Library.

Anyone interested in donating their time, talents or supplies to Project Linus can contact coordinator Theresa Costin at 214-383-9140 or go to their website: www.PLDallas.org. Walk-ins are welcome at the meetings. .
