Keep both feet on the ground with reading at the Little Elm Public Library

By Tina Hager

I think airports can be extremely confusing. That is why I try to stay away from them. Luckily Laurie drove me to the airport when I went to visit my grandchild. The good thing is that they do use alphabetical and numerical order. The confusing part is when they mix the alphabet with the numbers. It reminds me of an algebra equation gone wrong. While waiting to get on my first flight they mentioned it was overbooked and asked for volunteers to take another flight. First thought I had was how do you overbook a flight? We are in the age of computers right? Luckily they got enough volunteers so they did not have to choose the unlucky ones. My second thought was; is this a sign that I should not get on the plane?

Did I mention that I do not like to fly? Well my thoughts have not changed. The part that scares me the most is when the plane starts speeding down the runway and starts into the air. It did not help my comfort level any when the wings opened up and I saw internal parts of the wings. My first thought was, are they supposed to do that? My second thought was; is this a sign that I should not get on this plane? To ease my anxiety, I turned my flying experience into a three page story which I used as a Toastmaster’s speech. If anyone has stories of their own, I would love to hear about them, just to know that I am not the only one with these feelings about airports and flying.

On the ground, some upcoming programs of interest include the Little Elm Friends of the library meeting November 12 at 7 p.m. They will also be discussing the upcoming Trivia contest and are always in need of volunteers.

Various programs taking place on November 14 include the AARP conducting their Safe Driving program at 10 a.m. (fee and registration is required); National Gaming day is from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; story time with Maggie the dog is at 10:30 a.m.; children’s film festival is at 11 p.m.; and Saturday movie matinée is at 1 p.m. Also on November 14, the very popular craft fair will be going on from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.. This is a great time to do gift shopping. The library will also be holding a mini-book sale.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it is going to be very difficult to start or stay on a diet. But have no fear because Garfield the Cat has come up with the top ten other reasons to go off your diet in the book “Garfield’s Top Ten Tomcatfoolery by Jim Davis. Counting down from (10) Rice cakes cause mange; (9) Cheesecake population needs to be thinned; (8) Do-it-yourself liposuction available in near future; (7) Ignored desserts will develop low self esteem; (6) half-off coupon for fat farm has expired; (5) Shamu was a nobody before he put on weight; (4) Less mutant leftovers spawning in your refrigerator; (3) Love handles provide a great place for setting snacks; (2) Sumo wrestlers earn big bucks; and the number one reason to go off your diet is “a tummy is a terrible thing to waste”. If you would like to hear more Garfield top tens, let me know and I will add them periodically.

Speaking of books, bestsellers added this week include “Jim Cramer’s Getting Back to Even: Your Personal Economic Recovery Plan” by James J. Cramer; “Dragons” by Michael Connelly; “Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters” by Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger; “Pursuit of Honor” by Vince Flynn and “Bed of Roses” by Nora Roberts.

For more information or to register for programs call the library at 214-975-0430.
