LEPD offers tip to avoid thieves: Lock your car
By Penny Rathbun, Staff reports
Locking your car may seem like just one more thing to remember to do, but it will protect you from thieves looking for an easy opportunity to steal your belongings.
The Little Elm Police Department offers these tips to avoid becoming a victim.
"They are not breaking windows or anything else. They're just looking for unlocked cars," Sgt. Steve Garst of the Little Elm Police Department said.
Accordingly, LEPD is asking residents to take precautions.
1. If you have the option always park your car inside a closed and locked garage.
2. If you must leave your car outside, lock it, even if you plan to return shortly. Always lock your car, anytime you get out of it.
3. Do not leave anything of value in the vehicle or at the very least, keep these items out of sight. Remove purses, briefcases, laptops, GPS systems, telephones and chargers and any other item of value. Remove the holders for these items as well. Leaving a GPS holder in sight merely alerts a burglar that you have the device and encourages them to enter and rummage through compartments and under seats to find them.
4. Immediately report any burglary or any other suspicious activity. The police do not have any specific suspects at this time so be on the lookout for anyone who appears to be loitering around vehicles, spending an inordinate amount of time looking in car windows, pulling on car door handles, and things of that nature. Call 9-1-1 immediately if you see anything suspicious so that the police can check it out and eventually catch these burglars.
If you have any questions please contact the Little Elm Police Department at 214-975-0460.
