Me and Orson Welles

Published: Saturday, November 21, 2009 12:29 AM CST
Sorry Zac Efron fans, this blog is not in reference to the feature film in which the High School Musical heartthrob starred last year.

Rather this will be about ingenuity at our newspapers.

I used the reference of Orson Welles as the film director was the master of ingenuity. Look no further than the 1941 classic Citizen Kane (side note, anyone who says they don’t like that flick because it is boring is a fool). There is a specific portion in the convention hall in which Welles cut and spliced four different pieces of film to bring the scene together.

I tried to do a little something like that in Thursday’s edition of the Allen American.

If you don’t have a paper, it will be okay. But if you do need a visual reference, go grab the paper, I can wait ……………………………………… alright, let’s discuss the all-district volleyball package.

You will see several photos on the half-page package, but I want you to specifically focus on the shots of Allen senior DJ Phee, junior Emma Dridge and the teaser photo of Lady Eagles junior Taylor Gross.

Now for the twist … wait for it … those are all actually from the same photo!

My unnamed photographer gets a little credit for getting the picture in question, but not enough to actually have his name mentioned. The photo worked perfectly because while all three girls were in the same frame, they were spaced far enough apart so that I could do a different crop on each and not have the others appear in the individual picture. Add in the fact that Dridge, a libero, was in a different color uniform, and I figured most people wouldn’t be able to tell.

Unnamed photographer didn’t notice until I told him and he took the photo.

We don’t have many photographers at our company, and the ones we do have are burdened with other responsibilities as well. So while I would have loved to have great individual pictures of Phee, Dridge and Gross, that wasn’t an option and we had to improvise.

Clearly Thursday’s edition of the Allen American wasn’t Citizen Kane, but I think we were able to channel a bit of Welles’ ingenuity in pulling it all together. Next stop, frozen vegetable commercials and voice work in The Transformers movie.
