Slimming members share their tips for a Syn-free Thanksgiving!

Published: Sunday, November 22, 2009 1:26 AM CST
If you’re worried that a gain of 9, 10 or even 15lbs during Thanksgiving is as inevitable as Wal-Mart running out of cranberry sauce, you don’t need to worry any more. Ten Syns a day this holiday season means no one has to fret about the usual weight gain and inevitable starvation diet to make up for it in January.

If someone said you could eat as much as you want and still lose weight, you wouldn’t believe them. But it’s true – we encourage slimmers to eat as much as they want this thanksgiving of the right foods and to allow themselves treats every day. We succeed because there’s plenty to eat on our plan, so members never get hungry or bored or give up, only to start all over again.

Marla, joined her weight-loss group in Flower Mound six weeks ago and has so far lost 15lbs. She told us: "Through the holiday season I usually gain 10-15lbs and have to start over in January. I feel confident that this year will be different. This eating plan is so easy, and sooo generous.

"I’m swapping my standard, calorie-laden recipes for the healthy and delicious Thanksgiving recipes I’ve discovered at my Slimming World group. I know that I can enjoy second (or third!) helpings of turkey, green bean casserole, sweet potato dressing and pumpkin pie without gaining an ounce. This year I'll be enjoying meals with my family – and for the first time, without the guilt!"

Local Slimming World’s members share their top 10 tips for fun-filled festivities that won’t leave you with leftover lbs!

It can be really tempting to write off your weight loss from Halloween and start all over again – often many pounds heavier – in the New Year. But it really doesn’t have to be that way. You might not be able to control the Thanksgiving traffic, the topics of table conversation or the football score, but you can feel completely in control of your weight – even with a table laden with delicious seasonal fare!

If the stress of holiday travel is enough to have you reaching for the candy bars this year, ‘be prepared’! Take a bag full of fruit, zero calorie soda or water to keep refreshed during your journey and leave the candy and chips at home.

Instead of eating what's at gas stations, switch the donut and hotdog stand for a home-made picnic of pasta salad with beans and corn, chicken pieces and boiled eggs.

At the airport, head for seafood, broiled steak, baked potatoes, sushi or noodles for filling meals with less calories per mouthful!

On Thanksgiving Eve, choose a restaurant you know has healthy options on the menu, or eat before you go out so you’re not hungry and tempted to make unhealthy choices.

In the bar, choose spirits with plenty of zero-calorie mixers instead of beer, wine or cocktails (devastating for your waistline!).

This year shop with the following tips in mind, follow the Slimming World recipes and buy your ingredients to match.

Anya, who’s lost an amazing 20lbs at her group in Frisco says: “I used to dive into a burger bar or grab a mayo-filled sub between stores – and then wonder why I was putting on weight. Slimming World has shown me that there are healthy options out there – and I’m in charge.

"I have a huge chicken salad sub – without the sub – or a pot of chili and rice – without the sour cream and tortillas, because fitting in my black dress at New Year this year, is more important to me than the fast food!”

Are you the Thanksgiving Day chef in your house? If you nibble as you cook, avoid pre-dinner calories by having vegetable sticks, green beans, chopped fruit and berries in reach. And if the wine usually flows while you’re cooking, make up a pitcher of iced tea (sweetened with sugar substitute) or wine spritzers and make every glass go further!

With a feast just hours away, keep breakfast simple – for the cook and for your waistline! Forgo the pancakes, waffles and muffins (it really is worth it!) and create a colorful platter of melon, papaya, pineapple, kiwi and mango with a dip of fat free yogurt sweetened with honey – delicious and saintly!

It’s the calories after the big day that cause the most damage, so cook for one day – not for the week – and enjoy Thanksgiving knowing that leftovers will go straight in the garbage or be given away to friends.

Or cook healthy Thanksgiving recipes and fill your freezer with delicious dishes that will last all through the holidays!

Stay active by joining in with community events like the 5K Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. You’ll be in good company! And if you don’t fancy the early start, work up an appetite with a game of soccer in the garden while the turkey cooks.

The most important thing about Thanksgiving is … to give thanks. It’s a wonderful time for families, friends and fellowship and, although food plays a large part, it’s not the heart of this celebration – you and your loved ones are. Healthy changes that you make - for you and your family - through special celebrations like Thanksgiving and everyday meals together – could be the starting point of a healthier, happier, longer life together and that really is something to be thankful for.

Whether you go for an angelically healthy Thanksgiving or stick with a no holds barred celebration, remember that it is just one day. By eating healthily and deliciously during the weeks leading up to and after your festivities, you’ll soon be giving thanks for your new trim figure and your fitter, healthier life.
