Best in southwest descend on Plano for lacrosse tourney

Published: Tuesday, November 24, 2009 2:55 PM CST
Nearly every level of lacrosse was represented over the weekend at High Point Park in Plano as 60 teams from Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Tennessee participated in completion levels from grades 1-2 to varsity elite as part of the Plano Junior Jam and Lonestar Shootout.

The event, which ran from Friday to Sunday, was the first of its kind in the Southwest. The choice of Plano for the tournament wasn’t surprising considering the Metroplex is one of the fastest growing lacrosse markets in the country. In addition to the out-of-state squads, the event had a distinct local feel with teams from Plano, Flower Mound, Coppell, Allen, McKinney and Frisco.

The event itself proved that Plano has facilities to hold such a tournament, but Plano West proved the city also has the talent as the Wolves were victorious in both the varsity and junior varsity competitions. The wins should create a talking point for Saturday when West hosts its first annual alumni game, but the victories also qualified both Wolves squads for the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions, which is scheduled for Jan. 1-3, 2010, in Florida.

The tournament victory was especially sweet at the varsity level as West defeated defending Division II State Champion Coppell to win the Elite Division. Though the Cowboys fell short there, Coppell did win the Grade 7-8 A Division title.

The Metroplex wins didn’t stop there as the Flower Mound Force took the top spot in the Grade 3-4 Division.

In addition to the Varsity Elite and JV Rising Stars Divisions, the host city had six teams competing at the younger levels. Plano Black and White had squads in the Grade 5-6 A Division with Plano Red in that age classification’s B Division. Plano also had Black, White and Red teams in the Grade 3-4 competition.

The Plano Junior Jam and Lonestar Shootout, which served as a fundraiser for The Wounded Warrior Fund, also featured a fastest shot competition, most accurate shot contest and a speed and agility course. LacrosseRecruits.com was on-site as well to educate players and parents about the college recruiting process.
