Council approves deal for Pizza Hut HQ to relocate to Plano
By Kim Nguyen, knguyen@acnpapers.com
The Plano City Council has one more thing to be thankful for this season-- pizza.
At its meeting Monday, the council unanimously approved a $2.5 million offer to Pizza Hut of America Inc. to relocate its corporate headquarters to Plano from Addison, where the company has been since 1995.
The deal promises to bring 450 jobs to the area and would allow the company to move into a new 160,000-square-foot office in the Legacy Business Park near the Dallas North Tollway and State Highway-121 corridor.
“A big, national corporation with a very strong presence wants to headquarter in Plano,” he said. “Deals like this don’t come across our desks every day. It’s a wonderful opportunity that would benefit the entire area.”
Upon the deal’s agreement, the company would close on the land very soon, likely begin construction in early 2010 and occupy the building by early 2011, Dyer said.
“It’s a great message for a company of this size and stature to select Plano because it sends a message to other corporations that Plano has the whole package,” he said. “We’re very fortunate that our area --Texas, North Texas and Collin County -- is consistently on the short list because of everything we have to offer, including a high quality of life and wonderful educational opportunities.”
Pizza Hut of America Inc. would be joining several big-name companies who headquarter out of the Legacy Business Park, including JCPenney, AT&T, Frito-Lay, Countrywide, Dr. Pepper-Snapple, Computer Associates and EDS/Hewlett Packard, Dyer said.
“Those are just a few of the big names with world headquarters or major installations in Plano. The list goes on and on,” he said. “High-quality, international corporations like to be around other firms like themselves, and I hope Pizza Hut’s relocation brings even more consideration to the Plano area.”
Despite the hefty price tag that comes with the deal, Dyer is confident that the relocation is a long-term win for Plano. If depending solely on property taxes, the city may not recoup the money immediately, but the ancillary business brought into the city through the relocation will definitely boost local economics, he said.
“Pizza Hut’s move to Plano will have a significant impact on the restaurants, hotels and retailers in that area,” Dyer said. “As the company’s headquarters, there will be a significant number of people traveling to Plano to attend meetings and training sessions year-round, filling rooms in our hotels.”
Aside from the boost in the city’s revenue from hotel/motel taxes, the city will also will also see a bump in sales tax revenues, as employees would likely spend money fairly regularly in the area within close proximity to their offices, said Harry LaRosiliere, Mayor Pro Tem.
“There is such a positive momentum with this deal, as it brings 450 new people to the Plano area,” he said. “This is a pretty significant accomplishment for the city even during difficult economic times for a company of this caliber to relocate to Plano.”
