CHS Madrigal choir presents medieval world
By Jim Kilpatrick, jkilpatrick@acnpapers.com
The Coppell High School Madrigal choir will take guests back in time to a medieval world filled with brave knights, royalty and the sounds of Renaissance music at 7 p.m. Dec. 4 and 5 in the high school commons.
Seating will begin at 6:30 p.m. both evenings.
This is CHS Madrigal choir’s 15th annual feast, and includes dinner, comedic theatre and a concert.
“Madrigal feast really revolves around traditions,” said Caity Randall, CHS senior. “For me it's been great to see those traditions upheld like the wassail boy, the processional, and the singing of silent night with former members, as well as the creation of new traditions for future members to enjoy.”
Reservation forms are available at www.chschoirboosters.org. Tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for students and children.
“Over the years, the CHS Madrigals have gained national and international acclaim,” said Amy Szalkowski, publicity director, “Some highlights include being named the champion choir followed by honor choir at the annual Heritage Madrigal Festival competition.”
They also received a gold medal for their performance in the Heritage Music Festival at the London Royal Academy of Music in 2007, she added.
“I love being in Madrigals because it gives me a chance to make and hear
music people normally don't get to hear everyday,” said Chris Scoular, CHS senior. “There are always a couple songs we sing every year that knock the socks off people, and I love knocking socks off. When jaws hit the floor, it's a fantastic feeling.”
Michele Crater, a junior, said the program is for the family.
“Madrigal Feast is a great show for families to see, whether you have a kid
in the choir or not,” Michele said. “It not only involves a historical aspect of the Renaissance period, but humorous characters and food, as well. If you get the chance to see it, you shouldn't turn it down.”
The choir has been spending long hours in rehearsal.
“The preparation for this feast has been a chaotic and amazing opportunity
to learn musical and theatrical technique, as well as leadership, motivation and cooperation,” said Dinah Smith, CHS senior. “The end product is going to be really incredible.”
To Hilary Taylor, a junior at CHS, it is coming together as a choir.
“The singing is great, the costumes are beautiful, but it's gelling as a
choir that really gets us going,” Hilary said.
