Lutz wins regionals, eyes nationals
BY Kevin Hageland Staff Writer
The varsity cross country season may have ended for most, but Marcus junior Craig Lutz just keeps on running.
Not content to win only district, regional and state titles this season, Lutz has now added a Foot Locker South Regional Championship to his exponentially growing list of accolades.
Lutz accomplished his latest feat Saturday at McAlpine Greenway Park in Charlotte, N.C. as he won the boys race in 14:34 to qualify for the national championships, which are Dec. 12 at Balboa Park in San Diego. Lutz took charge early in the race and maintained his lead throughout the entirety course. The Marauder’s closest competitors were Kirubel Erassa of Grayson, Ga., and Jake Hurysz of Mebane, N.C., who finished 9 and 12 seconds back, respectively.
Joining the Texas contingent in San Diego are a trio of female runners as Greenhill’s Chelsey Sveinsson (first place), Plano Senior’s Rachel Johnson (third) and Cedar Park’s Amanda Russell (seventh) all placed in the top 10.
