(Slideshow) Mayors issue Salvation Army challenge

Instead of just volunteering to ring the bell at the bucket, the mayors of McKinney and Frisco will issue a challenge to see how many friends and donations they can bring to the Salvation Army bucket this season.

The Salvation Army buckets at Market Street in McKinney and Frisco from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19 will be the stage for a contest that will test new technology and social networking skills.

How much money could be raised if text messages, Facebook, twitter, Web sites and newspapers such as the Frisco Enterprise and McKinney Courier-Gazette could be employed to get the word out about bringing friends and donations to the bucket at one set time?

The idea came from McKinney media consultant J.B. Blocker, who asked a bell ringer if he had texted his friends about coming up to the bucket. Blocker said that having friends arrive at the bucket would be a fun way to ring the bell on a frosty day.

"The kid liked the idea, pulled out his cell phone and started texting his friends to bring their spare coins up to the Salvation Army bucket while he was standing there," Blocker said. "This could revolutionize the way people raise money. The mayors in Frisco and McKinney are excellent social networkers. Don't be surprised at how well they do with a challenge such as this one to bring friends to the bucket while they are ringing the bell."

Officiating Judge for the McKinney/ Frisco SA Challenge is the Honorable Jerry Lewis, a 23-year incumbent in Collin County. He will declare the winner and pass sentence at 3pm Saturday at On the Border of Custer and 121 (Sam Rayburn Tollway).

Wayne Richard will be testing the social networking bell ringing in Plano.

Stay tuned in by reading about it at www.starlocalnews.com and keep your phone on for a text or Facebook message or a Tweet.
