Car fire destroys house
By Zach Markovic, staff writer
The Plano Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire at 12:34 p.m. in the 3400 block of Wheatland Lane on Jan. 23. There were no injuries in the fire as both homeowners escaped.
Initially the call came in as an alarm investigation and as fire crews were responding to the call the 911 call came in reporting the fire.
The first crew on site found a large-volume fire in the garage. They began working on the fire in the garage as the second crew arrived and started fighting the fire through the frond door, fire department spokeswoman Peggy Harrell said.
Harrell said because the home was so large it took a while to get under control. Even when the fire was under control there remained several “hotspots” in the attack that the fire crews had to watch, she said.
The fire department has declared the home a total loss – estimated at $450,000 – and a loss of other contents at $300,000. One of the two vehicles in the garage has been identified as a 1986 Corvette.
Harrell said the preliminary cause is the Corvette caught fire. According to one of the homeowners who went out to start the vehicle, it would not start and then they noticed the flames coming out of the vehicle. However, the fire department is still investigating the fire and has not yet released and official.
