Around Frisco: Musical Monday

Collin College’s commercial music program welcomes nationally recognized music producer Rocky Gribble to speak on professional musicianship and opry music at 7 p.m. Monday in the Preston Ridge Campus Event Center, 9700 Wade Blvd., Frisco. This event is free and open to the public.


Gribble is president of Yellow Rose Productions and has produced the internationally known Grapevine Opry since 1987. He’s been involved in professional music making since the age of 14 and has played with many well-known performers.

Vaccines with donations

Collin County Health Care Services is offering free influenza vaccinations to children in exchange for donations of canned and non-perishable food items in recognition of the National Influenza Vaccination campaign. Vaccination plans vary by age group and type, and they will be available while supplies last at the Collin County Health Care Services clinic, 825 N. McDonald Street in McKinney. College Honors

Sarah V. Hirsch, Frisco, has been named to the fall 2009 Dean's List with Highest Honors at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD. Highest honors are earned for a semester grade point average of 3.90 or higher.

Oklahoma State University’s Fall Honor Roll includes the following: from Frisco High School, Kara Leanne Elliott, Ola George Flick, Dakota Christian Graham and Katherine Anne Williams; from Centennial High School, Erin Elizabeth Brown and Kristi Nicole Harkrider; and from Wakeland High School, Patrick Ryan McConegly. Earning additional honors with higher grades on the President’s Honor Roll are Brown, Flick, Harkrider and McConegly.

Military News

Air Force Airman 1st Class Matthew J. Ruhl has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. He is the son of Maria Brown of Fox Crossing Lane, Frisco, and grandson of Richard Herrera, Kansas City, Mo.

Bike fixes

A bicycle cleaning tips session is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Frisco’s Richardson Bike Mart, 8820 John Hickman Pkwy, west of Preston. The very experienced Tom Ernst will share his best advice on regular cleaning and maintenance.

Note: This is not a “hands-on” opportunity, so take a pad and pencil, not a bike.

Avoid fraud

Counseling on how to evaluate investment opportunities and avoid potential fraud will be the focus of the next educational session of the Collin County Aging and Disability Resource Center. The session will be held 9-11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, 1615 W. Louisiana St., McKinney. It is free and open to aging and disability professionals, consumers, caregivers and advocates. Gifts & Goodies

Legacy Christian Academy is holding its second annual Gifts & Goodies Marketplace 6:30-9 p.m. Feb. 5, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 6 at 5000 Academy Drive, Frisco, just off Legacy Drive. The public event features handcrafted items from local artists, and includes clothing, home accessories, jewelry, handbags, pottery, and candles, as well as specialty clothing for popular American Girl-style dolls. Admission is $5 per adult. Children 5 years old and under get in free.

Celebrate statehood

The Peters Colony Chapter of The Daughters of The Republic of Texas will meet at 10 a.m. Feb. 6, at Southmont Baptist Church, 2801 Pennsylvania Dr., Denton.  Gwen Neumann will give a presentation on how to read old handwriting in genealogical research, and the group will promote the celebration of Texas Statehood Day, Feb. 19.  Women ages 16 and over are invited to attend to learn more about the chapter and DRT.

Hospice luncheon

Matt Wadsworth, a hospice social worker, will speak on "Remembering Well" at the noon luncheon Feb. 9 hosted by Ann's Haven VNA. The free luncheon is the Denton Elks Lodge, 228 East Oak Street, Denton.  Reservations are requested and can be made by calling Molly Harrison, Ann's Haven VNA bereavement coordinator, at (940) 349-5900.

Go fish

Registration underway for Trick-A-Trout Kid Fish Feb. 13.  The Frisco Parks & Recreation Department will be releasing more than 2,800 Rainbow Trout into the pond at Frisco Commons Park, 8000 McKinney Rd. More information at FriscoFun.org or call 972-292-6500.
