Georgetown part of Adams Family
BY Kevin Hageland, Staff Writer
There was a time when Plano West senior Shanon Adams had a much simpler philosophy on college football.
“I used to think that if you didn’t get a call from Texas, USC or a school like that,” said the 6-foot-1, 205-pound inside linebacker, “then you weren’t going to be able to go to school on a football scholarship.”
Hence Adams concerns as his high school career progressed and the phone didn’t ring.
It may have taken a little longer, but the calls, letters and emails for Adams started to come in. Adams got several offers from Football Championship Subdivision schools, but was most intrigued by Bowl Subdivision schools like Air Force and Georgetown as well as Bucknell.
The Hoyas quickly jumped to the front of the line … that is until they stopped calling.
“After three games, things sort of dropped off with them,” Adams said. “I really didn’t know if I was going to go there.”
Adams, who was in the midst of a season that would see him named second team all-district, got in contact with the school and soon Georgetown was back in play as a viable option. As for why the calls temporarily stopped coming?
“I never found out,” Adams said. “I was too happy to be getting calls from Georgetown again.”
As evidenced by that answer, Adams was extremely interested in attending Georgetown. But he still had to make a visit.
“Georgetown … just the name, it’s such a prestigious school,” Adams said. “But once I saw the campus and met all the people there, that just clinched it.”
And while that visit sealed the deal for Adams, it was the inside linebacker’s play this season that sealed the deal for the Hoyas.
“Shanon was one of our leaders this season,” said Mike Hughes, West head coach. “He is a big kid that can run, and he hasn’t even reached his full potential yet.”
Adams is acutely aware of that as despite his commitment, he is still striving to maximize his promise in all areas.
“I won’t feel completely relaxed until I sign the dotted line,” he said. “But even then, I’ve got to keep my grades up until June 8 (West’s graduation day) and keep working out to get stronger and faster.
“If I keep doing those things, I should be fine.”
In the classroom, that workout regimen includes a concerted effort to improve his grades with an eye on studying business and political science in college. In athletic terms, Adams is currently working with the Wolves wrestling team. The senior also plans on practicing and training with the track team beginning next month. Neither of these efforts can be viewed as a surprise considering Adams has displayed similar drive for some time.
“I still remember when Shanon was in our feeder school, he used to ride his bike up here all the time for workouts,” Hughes said. “He has a great work ethic and is a kid with tremendous character.”
Adams has come a long way from riding his bike to West as he will now be flying to the Washington D.C. area to play for a Georgetown team that is attempting to make its way up in the Patriot League.
“I can’t wait until I get off the plane, on campus and officially become part of the Hoyas,” Adams said. “It’s like one of those things that is too good to be true.”
