Gaming competition helps Haiti
By Christina Rowland/crowland@acnpapers.com
The competition was intense last Friday in the Rockenbaugh cafeteria as students everywhere bowled, played tennis and baseball and sang “Sweet Home Alabama” in unison.
The occasion for this sports extravaganza was Rockenbaugh’s first gaming event.
The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) sponsored the fundraiser to give the students a chance to hang out after school and play Wii games for a good cause.
Students could choose to play Wii bowling, tennis, Homerun Derby or Guitar Hero V.
The bowling, tennis and Guitar Hero games were set up as competitions. Each of the competitions had specific rules and there were categories set up by gender and grade levels.
Affinity Sports Marketing provided the Wiis for the event and Canter Ferris Realtors were the food sponsors.
Students paid $10 for three hours of gaming complete with pizza, popcorn and a drink.
Teachers from the school volunteered to help make the event possible.
About 150 students attended, Grosskopf said.
The PTO raised $2,000 from the event that will be donated to the American Red Cross to help the earthquake victims in Haiti.
“We are excited to write this large check to the American Red Cross and give back to the community,” Grosskopf said. “ Our children are going to be amazed by the tremendous success they all helped make possible.”
