Hammond picks Drake

Plano Senior senior Kyle Hammond may not be the typical offensive lineman.
He’ll admit as much and longtime friend Spencer Holcomb describes Hammond as, “like a big teddy bear.”
But while Hammond may be friendly and lovable off the field, he is anything but in the trenches.
Hammond has shown the ability to get things done at a variety of spots on the field as he was originally slated to be a defensive end this past season before moving to left tackle and also playing some left guard in 2009.
That versatility paid off Wednesday morning as Hammond signed with Drake.
“I think Drake saw my potential,” Hammond said. “I talked with them over the summer and they have continually been in contact with me since then.”
Hammond also talked with Air Force, but was most interested in Drake. The Bulldogs contacted Hammond two months ago and said they may have a spot for him, but nothing was for certain.
That changed two weeks ago when Hammond went up to Des Moines, Iowa, for a visit. Hammond met with the coaching staff and came away impressed.
“Their coaches were really good at communicating what they wanted from us,” he said. “And they talked about wanting to help us become men; I was impressed by that.”
The Bulldogs were impressed with Hammond as well as the potential spot from two months ago turned into a definite scholarship.
“It came down to the wire,” said Hammond, who plans to study accounting. “But they told me on the visit and obviously I was very excited.”
That excitement carried over to Wednesday morning when Hammond was able to sing in front of his teammates.
“I’ve been around these guys for four years,” he said, “so it’s a good feeling to have them here for this.”
