Williams stands tall at ACU

Plano Senior senior tight end Ashton Williams was ready to accept a scholarship to play football at Abilene Christian before he even went on his visit.
Williams had considered Towson, Central Arkansas or a preferred walk-on spot at Arkansas before Abilene Christian came into the picture.
“In the back of my mind I was already saying yes,” Williams admitted. “But obviously I had to think about it some more and actually go see the campus.”
“It’s an amazing feeling,” Williams said. “A week ago I was probably walking on and maybe not being able to play football at all.”
But it wasn’t just the allure of playing football that cemented Williams’ interest in Abilene Christian. The Wildcats brought in a group of players, ranging from red shirt freshmen to seniors, and allowed Williams and other recruits to ask whatever questions they wanted.
Williams got the answers he was looking for.
“It was real nice because we all realized that these weren’t just coaches,” he said, “they were real people that actually cared about us as individuals.”
Williams was also intrigued by the small campus and feels as though he will be able to get to know everyone there as he pursues a major in sports medicine and a minor in coaching and athletic training.
That was enough to convince Williams to sign on the dotted line Wednesday. And his transition from one Wildcat program to another was made official in front of the Plano faithful.
“It means a lot to have all these people here today,” Williams said. “I think it goes to show that they don’t just view us as some player trying to win a game.”
