Brewer makes big splash at state
John Paul didn’t win it all Saturday at the TAPPS Division I State Meet, but Cardinals swimmer Cole Brewer did leave the Conroe ISD Natatorium with a pair of medals.
Brewer won the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:39.85, a mark that was more than seven seconds faster than the runner-up.
Brewer beat an El Paso Cathedral swimmer in the aforementioned race, but had to settle for second against the same school in the 200 individual medley. Brewer posted a time of 2:00.17 in that race.
Private schools into quarters
The boys soccer teams from Prestonwood Christian Academy and John Paul have moved into the quarterfinals of their respective TAPPS playoff brackets.
The Cardinals advanced in Division I by defeating Houston St. Thomas, 4-2. Next up for John Paul is a Saturday game against Trinity Christian Academy. That same day, Prestonwood will face Houston Northland Christian in the quarterfinals after pounding Houston Westbury Christian, 7-0.
Quarterfinal action isn’t limited to just the boys though as the girls soccer squad from John Paul is still in the mix for a state championship as well. The Lady Cardinals defeated Houston Duchesne, 4-1, in the round of 16.
John Paul, however, now has the unenviable task of locking up with Ursuline on Saturday.

UIL Centennial Celebration
As part of the UIL’s 100th year, the organization is holding fan voting in an effort to compile all-century teams for each UIL sport.
Voting is currently open for boys and girls basketball as well as soccer and there are a plethora of Plano ISD athletes in the running.
The most prolific group is in girls soccer where 12 former Lady Wildcats are on the list. That group includes Plano East head coach Dawn Crow, Plano Senior assistant Mary Morse, Lara Casey, Kelly Kochevar, Christine Messner, Allison Buckley, Gina Garcia, Catherine Lemons, Tina Luft-Patterson, Sara Reading, Jennifer Kammerer and Gina Turner. Also on that list are Plano West alums Brooke Bowman and Jill Heinemann.
For boys soccer, Plano East’s Lee Nguyen and Plano’s Dillon Powers are up for the All-Century team. Voting for soccer closes on March 20.
This list is less expansive, but equally impressive for basketball. On the girls side, Plano’s Chesley Dabbs is a nominee as is the West trio of Jacqueline Jeffcoat, Kathleen Nash and Kristin Nash. Voting for girls basketball closes Saturday.
Voting for boys basketball closes a week later. On that list from the PISD are the Wildcats duo of Joe Fulce and John Roberson as well as Panthers alumni Dallas Hunter and Jimmy King.
Those interested in voting can go to: Uil100.org.

Local gyms participating in the event include Elite Champion Gymnastics, Golden Grip Gymnastics and the WOGA Gymnastics Academy.
After the Elite competition, there will be an autograph session with Team USA members Bridget Sloan, Kayla Williams, Plano’s Rebecca Bross and Lovejoy’s Ivana Hong.

Jeffcoats, Turner among finalists
Sixty-two student athletes from across North Texas have been recognized as nominees for the 2010 McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball team and that list includes a trio of players associated with Plano West.
Leading the charge are Jacqueline and Jackson Jeffcoat, both of whom are in their senior seasons with the Wolves. Plano West senior Bakari Turner is on the list of nominees as well, but he was unable to play for the Wolves this year.
As a nominee, each player will be considered for one of the 24 positions on the final McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball boys team and one of the 24 positions on the girls team. The final team rosters will be announced Feb. 11 at 4:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
The games will be televised live March 31 on ESPNU. Alumni from those games include Candace Parker, Alonzo Mourning, Magic Johnson, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant and Chris Bosh.
Smith save one of the best
Plano West sophomore goalkeeper Abby Smith is one of 10 nominees up for 2009 US Youth Soccer Save of the Year.
The Smith save in question was from the sophomore’s time with her club team, the Dallas Texans.
Winners will be decided through a one-week period of online voting at: USYouthSoccer.org. Voting for Save of the Year is open Feb. 8-14. The 2009 US Youth Soccer Goal and Save of the Year award winners will be announced at the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala on Feb. 26 in Fort Worth.
Rattlers prep for spring
The preseason is in full swing for the Collin County Rattlers, a minor league football team in the Texas United Football League.
Already tapped as an early postseason favorite, the Rattlers opened preseason play with a 21-12 victory over the Tarrant County Hazzard. Integrating a slew of rookies onto the field, the Rattlers received notable efforts from Deric Propes, Brent Humphrey and Ben Masquelier. The rookies will aim to carry those efforts over with the team’s veteran-laden roster, which begins regular season play on Feb. 27 against the Lone Star Venom.
