Frisco schools cleaner than clean (SLIDESHOW)

Published: Wednesday, February 24, 2010 9:47 PM CST
When talking about Frisco’s schools, “clean” is just not enough to describe them. Immaculate is a better adjective. You could eat directly off the cafeteria tables, forget the plates.

There’s a reason for the cleanliness and the lack of H1N1 virus in Frisco. His name is Mohamed Mohamed.

Mohamed is the head of the custodial department for Frisco Independent School District.

When asked why Frisco schools shine, Mohamed will first show you the rosters he receives daily from every Frisco public school indicating absenteeism and the number of those absent who had flu symptoms. His objective is “zero.”

Mohamed opens the door to a spotless supply room and reveals just part of his fleet of steam cleaning and disinfectant equipment that would make any hospital green with envy. He demonstrates his protocol for daily cleaning of the buildings and wiping down of the cafeteria tables and serving equipment.

At every stop, I took swab tests and checked them with a luminometer. A luminometer is a device that uses light rays to determine the infestation of germs or bacteria on a surface.

The test results were astounding. Frisco ISD showed food-grade readings from surfaces that in other facilities scored high in contaminants.

Food grade readings are 30 or below. The tables measured 16, the floor in front of the exit read 117, which is extremely low.

The daily attention to the wrestling mats leaves them unbelievably clean. The same is true of the other athletic equipment, such as football shoulder pads and helmets.

For example, wrestling mats before cleaning but after a class read 624. After cleaning, the count was 57.

This was exciting news, and I knew someone who would want to hear about it.

Johnny Fowler is a 22-year veteran in the custodial field and is the vice president of Amerasheld Antimicrobial Solutions, based in North Carolina.

I called him and told him about these readings at Frisco ISD. Fowler said he was coming to Texas because he wanted to see this for himself.

His first comment on arrival was that he didn’t see this degree of cleanliness in hospitals he had tested.

“My gosh, you can see your face in the floor,” Fowler exclaimed. “These schools are the cleanest I have ever seen.”

Congratulations to the Frisco public school system and the people who take such good care of our kids, including Mohamed and his boss, Doug Zambiasi. Speaking for myself and my business partner, Gary Adkins, it’s no wonder we love Frisco so much.
