The Colony High School's tradition of basketball success continued on Saturday in San Angelo as the Cougars defeated Mansfield Legacy in the Region I final, 58-53.
Led by 24 points from Jordan Williams, the Cougars held off a late rally by Legacy (22-9) to return to the Class 4A State Finals Thursday through Saturday at the Erwin Center in Austin.
Joining The Colony (30-8) in the state tournament are Lancaster, Lake Travis, and Houston Yates. The Cougars will play Yates (32-0) at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Lancaster (35-2) faces Lake Travis (33-5) at 7 p.m.
"It's going to be exciting and fun. It's great for our school and great for our community. We're excited for these young men," Ryan said.
Against Legacy, the Cougars built an early lead at 21-8 after the first quarter and maintained a double-digit advantage heading into the second half. But the Broncos came to play, trimming The Colony's lead to five points early in the fourth.
Ryan said his team responded to the test and fought through it.
"In the playoffs there's so many good teams. Even if you're up, you know they're going to make a run," Ryan said. "We finished strong."
Williams played a big part in the outcome, hitting six 3-pointers.
"He played well today. I'm very proud of him and how he carried himself today. He stepped up for us," Ryan said on Saturday.
Austin Chatman had 14 points while Brent Okpoh added 10. A.J. Price had 8 and Troy Webster had 2 points.
The Colony last played in the state tournament in 2001 and 2002 when Deron Williams and Bracey Wright were on the roster.
