Aldi grocery store opens in Mesquite
By James Roth, jroth@acnpapers.com
In these tough economic times, everyone is looking for a way to save money. With the help of a new grocery store, customers may be able to do so. The Mesquite location was overwhelmed with interested residents during its open house on Tuesday. The store began selling groceries Wednesday morning at 9 a.m.
Aldi is a select assortment discount grocer that takes a unique approach to how customers shop for everyday food items. Beginning March 18, 27 stores will be coming to the Dallas area.
“We sell 90 percent of the fastest-moving grocery items you need,” said Chris Daniels, director of operations. “We carry the brands and sizes that most people want. It cuts down on our operational cost so we can sell items at a great price.”
“There’s no better time than now,” said Scott Huska, Aldi Denton division vice president. “Whether shoppers need to stretch a budget or simply choose to have more money to spend on other things, North Texans can count on us for high-quality select brands at prices no one else can touch.”
Aldi stores will also be opening in Carrollton, Frisco, Plano, and Rowlett, to name a few. Most stores will be opening up by March 18, with more to follow later this year.
“We have been looking at the Dallas market for a while,” said Daniels. “Dallas is a place that needs a store with low prices, and I think people will really enjoy what we have to offer them.”
Some drawbacks to Aldi stores are also their strength. By keeping only 90 percent of the fastest-moving grocery items on the market, certain brand names that people enjoy might be there one week and then gone the next. However, Aldi does offer ways to still satisfy the customer and make them want to return to the store.
“Certain people have certain tastes,” said Daniels. “We offer a double guarantee: if someone does not like an item, we will replace that product with one they like and still refund their money.”
Customers will save between 20 percent and 40 percent more when they shop at Aldi, compared to full-line grocery stores such as Albertsons, Kroger and Tom Thumb, according to company officials.
Representatives for the corporate offices of Albertsons, Kroger and Tom Thumb declined to comment on Aldi’s entry into the Dallas market.
The ALDI stores will offer free taste testing on certain items and customers can take a tour of the store during the open house events that precede a store opening. For information, go to www.alditexas.com.
