Both directions of 14th Street in downtown Plano were closed Tuesday afternoon after construction crews accidentally dug into a gas pipe under the street behind the Kwik Kar Lube and Tune.
The Plano Fire Department was dispatched at 1:30 p.m. to 14th Street between Municipal Avenue and N Avenue. A fire engine was sent to the site for standby as Atmos crews patched the gas line, said Peggy Harrell, PFD spokeswoman.
“Construction crews had been doing repairs up and down 14th Street over the last few weeks,” she said. “As soon as they realized they broke into the pipe, they immediately made phone calls to Atmos and the fire department.”
“Of course, we don’t want anyone walking by and flicking a lit cigarette in the vicinity, but the gas should dissipate into the air as its being released,” she said. “However, we are monitoring the wind direction and the surrounding environment and taking all the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe.”
