Fiery crash stalls traffic
By Heather M. Smith, hsmith@acnpapers.com
A tractor-trailer crashed and burned on the northbound side of State Highway 121 Thursday afternoon, causing authorities to shut down lanes and traffic to pile up.
The accident occurred at 1:30 p.m. when a semi collided with a dump truck and the resulting fire burned the trailer, leaving only charred remains. The cab of the truck dangled over the bridge near the I-35 and State Highway 121 intersection. The fire spread to two other vehicles on the road -- a half-ton pickup and a North Texas Tollway Authority fleet vehicle.
The driver of the semi, Rany Pierce, 59, of Cedar Hill, jumped out of the truck before it tipped over the edge, said trooper Lonny Haschel of the Texas Department of Transportation. The trucker’s company is called Leap of Faith Transportation.
Authorities shut down all northbound lanes and the entrance ramp from northbound I-35.
Lewisville residents reported seeing smoke from almost five miles away. Shirley Mayer, Lewisville resident, was walking her dog around 1:45 p.m. and saw the smoke from the fire.
“I live quite a distance from where the accident occurred, but I could see smoke from outside my house,” Mayer said.
Crews from the Department of Public Safety, the Lewisville Fire Department and the Lewisville Police Department were still on the scene cleaning up the mess from the accident during rush hour traffic hours later.
