Collin College has kicked off its next scholarship fundraising campaign by sending word down the grapevine through the silky voice of 2006 Miss Texas, Shilah Phillips.
The Collin College Foundation campaign to raise funds for scholarships kicked off at the evening’s events. Frisco Mayor Maher Maso said prior to the fundraiser, the foundation had successfully raised close to $500,000 to use on scholarships, with a goal of reaching $15 million raised in five years.
“The importance of the mission of the foundation is increasing funding for scholarships.” Maso said. “The college is the foundation on what we do in the community.”
As Collin College celebrates its 25th anniversary, this year’s Cabaret theme, “A Silver Tribute to Excellence in Education,” not only showcased the college’s quarter-century of educating the community, but also featured a cabaret performance created by Tom Grounds, volunteer production director, that included video clips from the past and glimpses of the college’s future visions.
And a part of the future vision, said Maso, is the president of the college, Cary Israel.
“This is the man behind the college and also Plano Citizen of the Year,” Maso said. “We wanted to thank him for his continued interest and dedication to the school.”
During the past 25 years, Collin College has grown to serve more than 46,000 credit and continuing education students – many of whom rely heavily on scholarships and financial aid assistance to fund their higher education dreams, adding to the importance of Collin Cabaret, which is in its third year.
Israel continues to point out the hard work his students put into their studies. The dance and theater students are continually recognized on a national level for their performances.
“Each year, the cabaret theme allows us to bring out entertainment that showcases the talents of our students, alumni and faculty, and we are really proud of them,” Israel said. “If you watch television, Broadway or the movies, you will see some of our graduates in those mediums. This year it really showcases where we started and where we are planning on going in the future.”
The Collin College Foundation raises funds annually to support students attending Collin College with financial assistance through scholarships. Collin College’s funding is primarily through tax dollars; however, tax revenues cannot be used for scholarships.
The college serves about 46,000 credit and continuing education students and offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs. The only public college in the county, Collin College is a partner to business, government and industry, providing customized training and workforce development.
