Last weekend Allen High School graduate Lance C. Case achieved a victory that left his parents in awe - he won first place along with his research partner Neil Jordan in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) student competition.
The pair presented a research paper regarding heat transfer methods and were rewarded with $500 for their efforts.
"We are so proud of him - this is his dream," his mother, Caroline Case, said. "To have done the presentation, number one, and then complete the amount of research it took in addition to carrying a full load as a full-time student."
"The presentation was at NASA at the Johnson Space Center, where he wants to be someday," Caroline said. "It was just the perfect icing on the perfect cake. It's a moment I will never erase from my mind - he was in his element and truly shining."
There were two methods researched for the pair's paper: the copper plate method - which Case researched - and the temperature-sensitive paint (TSP), that Jordan completed.
Lance Case received an academic scholarship to Baylor University and will graduate in four weeks with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He hopes to further his education on heat transfer in a master's program, but has yet to make a final decision on where he will attend.
According to his mother, two days after he graduates he will be on his way to Honduras with the global missions team, "Engineers With a Mission," to build a hydroelectric station that will provide electricity to a city.
The event presented students with an educational experience that the AIAA Web site says prepares them for their future as practicing aerospace engineers and allows them to submit a paper for possible publication by the AIAA. Lance and the other winners will advance to the next level of competition during the conference event scheduled for January 2011 in Orlando, Fla.
According to the AIAA Web site, the objective of AIAA Regional Student Conferences is to provide students the opportunity present technical work as they would at a professional AIAA meeting. In addition, they establish professional relationships, learn from others and hone their communication skills. Their work is evaluated by professional members serving as judges, with the intent of providing substantial feedback on the quality of their work.
