McKinney Courier-Gazette
District students, teachers and administrators gathered last week at the El Dorado Country Club to honor 36 high school students, 12 from each high school, with The Distinguished Student Award the highest honor a student can receive from MISD. Recognized alongside each student was an inspirational teacher they selected.
The award recipients in the category of Fine Arts:
Inspirational Teacher: Caris Dunn, Dance Teacher/Drill Team Director
Activities/Achievements: Captain of the McKinney Boyd Dance Team, YMCA and McKinney Public Library volunteer, French Club, Debate Team member
Personal Interests: Student ministry at Prestonwood Baptist Church, dance, politics
Future Plans after Graduation: Kilgore College or the University of Arizona, Dance
As my dance teacher and director of the McKinney Boyd Bailadoras, Mrs. Dunn has inspired me both physically and mentally. Physically, she has pushed me beyond my limits while increasing my endurance. Mentally, she has led me to become a stronger woman by challenging my leadership skills by being captain. Mrs. Dunn has impacted my life in a tremendous way and will contribute to my future endeavors.
Amanda Nitcher: McKinney High School
Inspirational Teacher: Steve Garms, Choir Teacher
Activities/Achievements: Top ten percent for four years, Concert Varsity Choir and Harmony, Jazz Ensemble, Youth music intern at Cottonwood Creek Baptist, Valley Creek Elementary School volunteer
Personal Interests: Writing songs, playing the guitar, finding new and exciting bands, going to concerts, spending time with family and friends, building relationships, just having fun
Future Plans after Graduation: Ouachita Baptist University, Music
Mr. Garms has shown me that singing comes from inside of you, not just your throat and diaphragm. He has inspired me to use my talents and gifts to create relationships with those you sing with. He has pushed me to become the best musician that I can be and taught me to never give up in any rehearsal.
Sara OBrien | McKinney North High School | Fine Arts
Inspirational Teacher: Alan Harkey, Band Director
Activities/Achievements: National Hispanic Merit Scholar, McKinney North band officer and Drum Major, All-Region Band, All-Area Band
Personal Interests: Martial arts, photography, reading, writing
Future Plans after Graduation: Baylor University, Psychology
As my band director for the past four years, Mr. Harkey has taught me that it is the process of our goals, the improvement we make over time that matters most, not necessarily achieving these goals. Through his endless hours of preparation for our band program and balancing his own life, he has taught me that we make time for the things that matter most to us. His level of dedication and passion will follow me through life.
