Joe LaPuma has had a longstanding passion for education and will soon bring a new dedication for excellence to Creekview High School.
“The first thought and feeling was a sense of pride and honor knowing that the interview committee and the administration believed in me and recommended me as the right person for the job,” LaPuma said. “What went through my mind next was the great opportunity and responsibility that was before me and how my role as principal will allow me to have a positive impact on so many students in our community.”
LaPuma was the principal at DeWitt Perry Middle School last year. LaPuma has worked in the district for the past five years, but has been in education for the past 19 years.
“I spent he majority of my time in education working with secondary students from grades six to12, either as a teacher, coach or an administrator,” LaPuma said. “To be a high school principal at this point of my career is the realization of a professional goal that has required 20 plus years of hard work preparing for this challenge and great opportunity.”
LaPuma admitted that he will miss DeWitt Perry, but is excited and optimistic about running a school that has more than 2000 students.
“I will miss the awesome DeWitt Perry staff that I have worked so closely with the last five years,” LaPuma said. “I look forward to meeting the students and staff that make up this learning wonderful learning community. I also look forward to the school spirit, the traditions and the energy of a large campus.”
LaPuma said he will not make any drastic changes as the new principal. Instead he will try to continue the tradition that Creekview has built and continue to focus on high student achievement for all students.
“I would like to thank the board for giving me the opportunity to be a part of something so great. I believe the board recognized in me the same promise and potential I see in the students,” LaPuma said. “I expect the best of my students, and I am more than happy to work with each to achieve their goals. I know the school district and the community. I appreciate all of the support, and I look forward to teaching and training today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders.”
