Button Memorial provides free lunch to children during summer

There is such a thing as a free lunch.
Button Memorial Methodist Church is a busy place at lunch time. More than 100 children gather around noon every week day for a sack lunch.
“The main thing is,” said Button Memorial Methodist Church Pastor Denise Peckham,”we're making sure we're meeting the needs of the children in this community. We also have the opportunity to interact with people we wouldn't otherwise know.”
Volunteers put together a 150 or more sack lunches that contain a sandwich, fruit, chips and a drink. Peckham said many of the children who receive lunches eat them a little at a time, saving parts of the lunch so they will have something to eat later in the day.
She saw an email abut the Christian Community Action program and decided it would be a good undertaking for the church.
CCA and Button Memorial Church buys some of the food for the sack lunches. There are also donations from Mrs. Baird's and Frito Lay and individual people.
The children eligible for this program are those that receive free lunches or reduced price lunches in school. During the summer those children do not have access to those lunches.
The volunteers who make the lunches are not all regular church goers. Peckham does not care. She is glad for their help.
“You don't have to believe in Jesus to make a sandwich,” she said.
Button Memorial Methodist Church will accept donations of food or money for the Kids Eat Free lunch program.
Another church ministry is Angel Food Ministries. People can order boxes of food at reduced rates and pick them up at the church.
Cash donations for either program can be dropped off at the church on Eldorado Parkway across the street from Town Hall or mailed to Button Memorial Methodist Church at P.O. Box 68, Little Elm 75068.
