Longtime doc puts stock in time in Plano

Published: Friday, July 23, 2010 6:30 PM CDT
For 20 years, Plano schools have enjoyed the services of Dr. Alexander Glogau, a team physician who has become a fixture in the community.

Remaining in Plano after serving a fellowship, Glogau’s passion for what he does is apparent. When asked why he has been so involved with Plano area football for two decades, there’s no hesitation in his answer.

“Have you ever been on the sideline of a football game?” he asked. “When you’re on the sideline and you’re into it there’s nothing more exciting. It keeps you young, it keeps you vigorous.”

Glogau is a lifelong athlete, playing football, basketball and lacrosse. After a collegiate football career during his undergrad at Johns Hopkins, Glogau knew from his first year of medical school at the State University of New York where he wanted to specialize in medicine.

“In my first year I knew orthopedic surgery is exactly what I wanted to do,” he said. “If you were an athlete, essentially, orthopedic surgery is what you did.”

Glogau highlighted how a career in sports medicine is gratifying because of how apparent his work is on injured athletes and how much of an impact a team physician can make on the field.

“One of the beauties of being an orthopedic surgeon is that you take care of a lot of injured people and injuries do well,” he said. “The majority of people with injuries are very gratifying to heal because you can see how well your patients do right in front of your eyes very quickly usually.

“There's also all the relationships with all the coaches, even the officials, everybody out there eventually needs to talk to you about something. The importance on the field is dramatic and how often you are able to improve peoples’ lives and help them out is tremendous; that’s why I went in to it.”

Although only required to be actually on the field for football games, Glogau is also a supporter of the other athletic programs at Plano, not surprising considering his son Nicky plays football for Plano West. Maintaining a network with all trainers in the Plano ISD, Glogau and doctors in his fellowship program are able to cover most of the city’s football games.

Having played football and being a team physician, Glogau is extensively knowledgeable about football injuries. As the kids participating in Texas high school football continue to get bigger, faster and stronger, he is confident sports medicine is keeping up with the growth.

“Our surgeries are becoming very elegant,” he said. “I think the ability to get the significantly injured athlete back on the field has tremendously improved over the last 20 years and I think in the next 20 years it will even be better.

“So despite the fact that the kids are getting bigger, stronger and hurting themselves more, I think our abilities to get them back are getting improved dramatically.”

After being part of the Wildcats program for so long, Glogau took on a new challenge six years ago when he offered his services to the newly founded John Paul II. With the school a, “hop, skip and a jump,” from his practice, the school has quickly grown on him.

“There’s a great community, unbelievable parents and unbelievable support in the few years that I've been working with them,” Glogau said. “These people truly appreciate the time that I give to them over there.”

Although the football program has yet to achieve success, they have a loyal supporter in Glogau.

“They have heart,” he said, “and they work hard and they try their best.”

And success of the teams or not, it’s apparent the good doctor isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

“Plano has been a great place to practice,” Glogau said. “I came down from New York to do my fellowship, and just never left. Wouldn’t change it for anything. Tremendous sports, great families, great place to raise your family.”
