Shoulder sprain won't sideline Smith

Published: Tuesday, August 31, 2010 8:44 PM CDT
In last year’s season-opener against Southlake Carroll, Plano West lost both Sean Ballard and Jarrett Horan for a lengthy amount of time due to injury.

So when Wolves junior quarterback Carson Smith went down in Thursday’s season-opener against Arlington Martin and went to the hospital with an apparent collarbone injury, there was an understandable cause for concern from the Wolves.

But things are not as bad as they appeared at the onset as Smith visited the doctor and came away with a relatively clean bill of health, despite sporting a sling around campus.

“Nothing is broken, they said it was just a shoulder sprain,” said Mike Hughes, West head coach. “If we had a game Friday, the doctor said he would be able to play.”

Considering West has a bye this week, there is no need to put Smith to the test so quickly. And considering the Wolves are in the midst of non-district play, Hughes said he would have labeled Smith’s availability this week as being a game-time decision.

Knowing Smith will be available for next Friday’s road game against South Garland is a relief for Hughes, but not necessarily because of what Smith provides the team.

“Of course we want Carson to be healthy, but it’s not just about football,” Hughes said. “Anytime a young man gets hurt, you think about it a lot because keeping these kids healthy is your No. 1 concern as a coach. Being healthy, that’s a kid’s life right there, we’re just playing football.”

Should Smith have any reoccurring problems with his shoulder, the quarterbacking duties would fall to Nick Glogau.

The senior signal caller finished out Thursday’s 16-14 win over Martin and Hughes is confident should the job fall to Glogau again.

“Nick is an intelligent player; he’s a really smart young man and having him out there is like having a coach on the field,” he said. “He was the quarterback on our JV team last year and, just like everyone else on the team, he knows you have to be ready if one of the first-teamers goes down.”

That was the case Thursday night, but Smith should be ready to answer the call going forward.
