Football: Carroll looks to bounce back against Bell
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, Jthomas@acnpapers.com
Following a chaotic week, Carroll’s football team was unable to regroup and put together a solid effort in its season-opener Friday against Coppearas Cove.
The Dragons battled for the first half and led, 14-7, early in the second quarter before the Bulldawgs closed the game scoring 28 unanswered points for a 35-14 victory.
The Dragons will look to bounce back at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they face L.D. Bell at Pennington Field in Bedford.
The Dragons are still awaiting a ruling on quarterback Daxx Garman’s appeal to the UIL after Garman was ruled ineligible by the District 6-5A executive committee just hours before kickoff against Cove following a separate WFAA-TV investigative report.
In the meantime, quarterback Drew Ahmuty will look to build on a season debut that saw him complete 15-of-23 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns. But the junior did throw a pair of interceptions, including one in the Cove end zone near the end of the first half.
“I thought Drew did a good job considering the circumstances of tonight,” said Hal Wasson, Carroll coach, following the game. He will get a lot better next week because he is a competitor. He will learn from some things tonight. We have to protect him better and I know our team will respond and do just that.”
The Dragons were also a victim of a lost fumble and lost the turnover battle, 3-0.
The Blue Raiders are coming off a 30-20 victory against Mansfield Legacy in their opener. The teams were tied at halftime before Bell outscored Legacy, 17-7, in the second half.
Carroll must focus on slowing Bell’s running game. Against Legacy, Kenneth Farrow racked up 250 yards on 30 carries. Stopping the run proved to be difficult for the Dragons against the Bulldawgs, as Cove gained 351 yards on the ground with four scores.
The Blue Raiders were also opportunistic on defense, scoring a touchdown on a fumble return.
