Volleyball: Coppell hosts, wins Jenny Eckert Tournament

Coppell volleyball coach Sherri Hankins said her squad had a “great all-around team effort” during the weekend as the Cowgirls hosted and won the championship at the Jenny Eckert Memorial Tournament.
The Cowgirls (18-5) made their way through the tournament unscathed, going 3-0 Thursday in pool play before earning three consecutive wins Saturday in the championship bracket. Rounding out the top finishers were Dumas in second, Rowlett in third, Plano West in fourth and Allen in fifth.
Coppell’s Cassidy Pickrell was named the event’s MVP, while Cowgirls Chiaka Ogbagu and Erica Bohannon also received all-tournament nods.
For the tournament, Pickrell notched 41 kills at a .241 efficiency to go with 41 digs and four blocks.
Ogbogu, meanwhile had 22 kills and 16 blocks while Bohanon totaled 33 kills at a .241 efficiency and 14 blocks.
“Our blocking took care of a lot of the load,” Hankins said. “And Chi and Erica got to a lot of balls on the back row. Our defense played well and our communication has really been improving. Our setters, Sarah Arnold and Bear Bass did a great job of getting the ball to our hitters. They really spread the ball around. We had a lot of selfless play and that’s a big reason why we are succeeding.”
Bass led the team with 91 assists and five aces during the tourney. Chandler Hatton chipped in 31 kills at a .379 efficiency, Kristen Dickerson had 59 digs and Shelby Mason went the entire weeked without a hitting error, totaling 17 kills.
In pool play, Coppell defeated Trinity Christian Academy, 25-17, 25-18; Lewisville, 25-13, 25-13 and Mansfield Legacy, 25-13, 25-21.
The Cowgirls had much tighter matches in bracket play, needing three games to win each match, but again came out as winners. Coppell topped Allen in the quarterfinals, 25-13, 23-25, 25-16; Plano West in the semifinals, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21 and Dumas in the finals, 25-17, 18-25, 25-19.
“Dumas is an up-and-coming (Class) 4A team,” Hankins said. “They have two very good middle blockers and some strong attackers. I was pleased with the way we played against them.”
Lewisville also competed in Coppell, but had a difficult time. The Farmers won their first match Thursday against Mansfield Legacy, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22 but followed with four consecutive losses. Lewisville fell against Coppell, 25-13, 25-13 and TCA, 25-16, 25-19 in pool play, before dropping matches in the consolation bracket against Creekview, 25-19, 25-19 and Birdville, 25-18, 25-22.
But the Farmers bounced back Tuesday in a non-district match against Newman Smith, rallying after dropping the first game to top the Lady Trojans, 20-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-13.
Lewisville had previously been swept by Smith on Aug. 14, 25-20, 27-25.
“We played a little bit better than the last time,” said Jay Samide, Lewisville coach, “which was good to see because we didn’t play very well this weekend. We’re working on staying steady, cutting down on our errors and not giving up too many big runs.”
Samide said Tami Leranth played well, while Brandi Nickelson hit the ball well and Kristyn Nicholson led the distribution.
“We had some lineup changes in the first game,” Samide said. “And they didn’t work too well. But we came back, played tough and got the win.”
