Police seek hit-and-run suspect

Published: Friday, July 30, 2010 4:46 PM CDT
The Colony Police Department is investigating a hit-and-run accident in which a cyclist from Plano was critically injured.

According to a statement, TCPD received a 9-1-1 call shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday reporting that a bicyclist, identified as Debbie McGregor, 42, was struck from behind by a car while traveling westbound in the 7800 block of Windhaven Parkway, near the intersection of Plano Parkway.

The caller believed McGregor to be severely injured, and stated that debris from the bicycle was scattered all over the roadway. Eyewitnesses confirmed the account, with one adding that she was traveling behind the suspect's vehicle when it struck McGregor at about 40 mph.

The witness further stated that the suspect's vehicle continued without stopping.

According to police, an off-duty nurse stopped to aid McGregor, "who was lying motionless and bleeding in the street." McGregor was transported to Plano Presbyterian Hospital where she remains in ICU as of Friday afternoon, suffering from a severe concussion, facial injuries, and a fractured back.

The route along Windhaven is popular among cyclists, and police have learned McGregor is a renowned triathlete who was training for an upcoming competition.

The Colony Police Department is seeking help from the public in an effort to identify the driver who struck McGregor. The suspect's vehicle has been described as a small, white or silver compact car. Anyone with information is asked to call 972-625-8273.

" My thoughts, my prayers and my heart goes out to this lady. How could anyone be so cold-hearted to not stop and help. If they have any compassion at all I hope they will p/u the phone and turn themselves in - do the right thing. This person is dangerous and needs to be taken off the streets. I hope they find them and throw the book at them. "
