Investigation clears Dragon football program
By Bill Conrad, bconrad@acnpapers.com
An independent investigation by Marty Criswell has found there was no wrongdoing regarding the Carroll Dragon 7-on-7 football program.
A television report by WFAA-TV (Channel 8) alleged wrongdoing by Carroll football coaches were on hand at football games and practices last summer between the Dragons and Euless Trinity. The station's report showed coaches from both teams at the events and showed them communicating with the players. While coaches are allowed to be present and are allowed to encourage the players, no coaching is allowed during the games. The Carroll summer team is coached by Phil Barber, a volunteer.
The investigation was ordered by CISD at the request of the District 7-5A executive committee. After receiving Criswell's report, the district executive committee voted that no further action should be taken against the team. Trinity was cleared by the District 6-5A executive committee after a similar investigation was carried out.
“The presence of a parent/coach and a non-coach in the WFAA video clip make it difficult to assign responsibility for comments that are questionable, but could be construed as encouragement,” Criswell said in his report. “The athletic auditor (Criswell) finds that the Carroll ISD is a model to be followed for 7-on-7 compliance regarding most areas of concern (communication, organization, equipment, money management, food, drinks, transportation and housing. The AA recommends that all coaches attending non-school athletic events should be directed to completely refrain from sport-specific instruction.”
