CHS Cheerleaders raise money for breast cancer

The month of October represents breast cancer awareness month where you see pink just about everywhere you look. From the NFL to local high schools, everyone is helping to raise awareness, including the Creekview High School cheerleaders.
The Creekview cheerleaders have been raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the past two years. This year, the squad set out to raise $5,000 that will benefit 2010 Komen Dallas Race for the Cure.
“We have had our squad pass buckets around the stands at the football games to try and raise money,” said Hailey Willis, cheerleader at Creekview. “In addition, we have had our football team and the drill team wears pink as well to help raise awareness.”
“We held one fundraiser at the Kroger one weekend. We stood outside and asked people for a donation when they would come in and leave the store,” said Suzanne Reese, head cheerleading coach for Creek view. “We had a lot of people in the community donate to us. We are fortunate to live in such a generous community where people will give something to a greater cause. Even if it is just a few dollars, it makes a difference.”
Reese is also the student council advisor at Creekview. She has joined the student council and the cheerleading squad together to help sell pink bracelets around school. The proceeds from the bracelets will help go towards the $5,000 goal.
“It is a joint effort within the school,” said Sharon Kim, cheerleader at Creekview. “This Friday, the whole school is going to wear pink. It is a great feeling to know we are doing this for a great cause”
As of Tuesday, the squad had raised more than $4,800. Reese and the squad are hopeful they will surpass their goal.
“We are hoping we will be able to surpass our goal. Last year our goal was $2,000 and we ended up raising $3,000,” Reese said. “We thought that $5,000 might be too high initially, but I think we are going to surpass it.”
The squad, along with some of the cheerleading moms, will participate in the 2010 Komen Dallas Race for the Cure. Reese said around 30 cheerleaders and mothers will participate in the walk on Oct. 16.
“The walk is what we have been working for since the summer,” Reese said. “This is the biggest thing we do as a team and we are looking forward to the walk on Saturday.”

“I am so proud of the girls and the mothers for putting in as much time as they have,” Reese said. “They have given up a lot of Saturday’s to make this goal possible. It is a cause that we believe and we are glad that the school and community believe in it as well too.”
