What trait do you admire most in others? Their ability to keep moving forward, to find courage and strength under pressure and keep moving forward in life

What does your job at the hospital entail? I assist patients and their families as they are walking through their breast cancer journey. I get them connected with hospital services and community resources and provide emotional support.

What have you seen as the biggest problem facing breast cancer patients? Stress and anxiety, the fear of the unknown – there’s the physical stress that comes with treatment, the financial stress, family stress and the emotional stress as it relates to the body and appearance changes.

How can friends and loved ones help? Family and friends, neighbors, places of worship – those types of communities – truly can assist patients as they are diagnosed by just being there as a support system to be able to listen and offer their friendship and support. It’s the little things: transportation to and from treatments, perhaps a meal for woman who may be too tired, maybe child care. Just being there even if it’s long distance.

We truly encourage the support network to support women; we also can supplement that with support groups and networks. Support groups are great and unique in that they get to know other women who have similar diagnoses. Though no two women or diagnoses are the same, it helps them be able to be in a network of people who are going through a similar journey.

Baylor Plano has a couple of services specifically for breast cancer women. We have a breast cancer support group that meets monthly. There is an American Cancer Society program called Look and Feel Better. They provide a nice makeup kit and have an evening where patients can learn about scarf tying to wig care and makeup application, just to make them feel better whil going through the course of cancer treatment.

Why is it important to have a nurse navigator? No woman should have to face this alone. It can be an overwhelming feeling to be told the word cancer. To know there is someone on the other end of the phone and they can call any time or we can meet in person.

How can others get involved? There are wonderful programs that are offered through the American Cancer Society. And organizations such as Susan G. Komen have a volunteer program where someone who would like to support can become a volunteer here a Baylor Plano and have the opportunity to assist families and patients here on our campus.
