8-5A's winless Wolves drop fifth straight

Published: Saturday, October 23, 2010 1:08 AM CDT
CARROLLTON — It wasn’t a performance that coaches dream of, but Hebron’s football team got back on the right track Friday night upping their District 8-5A mark to 3-2 with a 24-16 victory at home against Plano West.

The Hawks scored a touchdown on their opening possession and never relinquished the lead, pushing the margin to as many as 15 before a late West rally cut the deficit to eight.

The Wolves had a chance to tie the game in the fourth, taking over at the Hebron 30-yard line with 3:49 remaining, but a holding penalty quickly put West in a hole and the Hawks’ defense rose to the occasion, forcing a turnover of downs to secure the win.

“We won the game and that’s what our objective was tonight,” said Brian Brazil, Hebron head coach. “It wasn’t very pretty. But again, I know how [Plano West] coach [Mike] Hughes feels on the other side. You don’t care if you play bad as long as you win. It seemed like both teams at times were playing not to win it as opposed to going out there and getting it. But I was pleased with the way we battled.”

In a game that featured sporadic rainfall, neither Hebron nor West were at their best, combining for six fumbles (one lost), three interceptions and 22 accepted penalties.

“There were a lot of penalties today and we haven’t had that all year,” Brazil said. “But it was on both sides and some crews just tend to call more penalties than others. There seemed to be a lot of confusion at times. But we won the football game. However, we made too many mistakes and early jumps and we have to get those things straight. There was a lot of pre-snap movement.”

West, meanwhile, is still seeking its first district win of the season.

“I thought we played well on defense tonight,” Hughes said. “If you hold those guys to 24 points … you know they’ve been scoring 60 over here. They moved the ball the first few drives but I thought we played well after that. But offensively we just don’t have anything we can hang our hat on or be consistent with. That was the difference. We had our chances. We just didn’t get it done and finish them off.”

The Hawks appeared to be on their way to a commanding win early in the first half, grabbing a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

Hebron marched 62 yards on 10 plays on their opening drive, including 53 yards on five carries from quarterback Kyle Aubuchon, who capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run.

Two plays later, Hebron’s Amin Fooman intercepted West quarterback Nick Glogau and the Hawks quickly capitalized in four plays with a 20-yard touchdown run by Dezmond Wortham.

But later in the second quarter, Wortham had a 38-yard touchdown run and a 15-yard touchdown run negated by holding penalties on the same possession.

“We were good at times until we had some penalties,” Brazil said. “That’s when we seemed to self destruct. We were gashing, gashing and gashing them until Dezmond got banged up a little bit. But [Damien Delaney] got a chance to play a lot more on offense because Dezmond just didn’t have all his mobility.”

Wortham finished with 44 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown, while Delaney chipped in 22 yards on five carries. Aubuchon led the Hawk rushing attack with 125 yards on 20 carries.

The Wolves, however, took the momentum heading to halftime posting a touchdown on their final possession of the half, sans taking a kneel in the final seconds, when Glogau connected with Jordain Lilavois down the sideline for a 29-yard touchdown reception. The catch capped a 9-play, 70-yard drive.

West sliced the lead to 14-9 with a safety early in the third quarter after Hebron had a snap on a punt attempt sail through the back of the end zone.

Later, a 45-yard field goal from Kurt Walker gave Hebron a 17-9 lead before Aubuchon found JT Teague for a 29-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 24-9.

West running back Jarrett Horan, who finished the night with 111 yards on 20 carries, dove in from 1-yard out for the final margin of 24-16.

“Too many mistakes on offense,” Hughes said. “Just inconsistency and too many mistakes. We had some penalties that hurt us, no doubt about it. You can’t turn the ball over when you get inside the red zone. You can’t have foolish penalties and be successful.”

West next faces Flower Mound at 7:30 p.m. Friday from Kimbrough Stadium.

“We’re going to fight hard,” Hughes said. “We’re going to fight to the end, make no mistake about it.”
