Arrest made in Plano East bomb threat

A student has been arrested in connection with a Plano East Senior High School bomb threat that closed the school Tuesday.
Chase Clemmons was arrested by the Plano Police Department in connection with one of two bomb threats received over a four-day period. The first was found on Friday, late morning or early afternoon, according to Lesley Range-Stanton, director of communications for Plano ISD, and the second came late afternoon on Monday.
Both were written on bathroom walls, and both are not credible at this point, officials said.
“In both cases, Plano East implemented the district’s safety and security plan and took immediate action and precautions,” Range-Stanton said. “The plan has involved a thorough search of the campus, including use of the explosive detection canine unit, but no evidence of a bomb has been found.”
Range-Stanton explained that in an abundance of caution, classes were canceled for Tuesday.
“The cancellation of school will enable the district to completely sweep the building with the canine units,” Range-Stanton said. “Plano ISD is continuing to work with the Plano Police Department to follow up on strong leads in both instances.”
Range-Stanton also explained that students will not be required to make up school time lost for Tuesday’s closure, but any subsequent time lost due to these types of threats will be made up.
“Plano ISD will continue to investigate in collaboration with the Plano Police Department,” Range-Stanton said. “We take all incidents such as this very seriously and are working to make sure our students and staff members remain safe.”
According to the Plano Police Department, a school resource officer responded to the initial report of graffiti of a threatening nature at the senior high school. The graffiti written inside one of the boy’s bathrooms indicated that an explosive device would be brought to the school.
Police detectives identified several persons of interest during the investigation and arrested Clemmons, of Richardson.
Clemmons has been charged with terroristic threats. The 17-year-old Plano East student was transported to the Plano city jail upon identification as a suspect.
The second bomb threat came after Clemmons’ arrest, so it is not believed to be related at this time to the first one. The second threat is similar to the first, and the investigation is currently ongoing.
