Volleyball: Martin joins Big 12, signs with K-State

McKinney Boyd senior libero Kelley Martin became the school's latest college signee on Wednesday by putting her name to a national letter of intent with Kansas State, which beat out the University of Tennessee and Clemson to become the future home of the four-year varsity player.
The initial offer was made three days after K-State scouts saw her play in July.
“The moment I stepped on campus I fell in love with it,” Martin said. “I knew that's where I wanted to play.”
“That's what a parent wants to hear,” she said. “That was the end. No more searching, no more worrying.”
Martin was named Best Defensive Player in her district the past two seasons, led 10-5A in digs this year at 720, and has been named to the All-State team in two sports, swimming her freshman year and volleyball as a senior.
“She is definitely the foundation of our defense and has been for the past four years,” said Boyd head coach Kelly Quinn. “She's such a phenomenal athlete. What makes her special is her instincts. She goes after balls that you wouldn't even think were possible. She has that killer instinct, and literally the ball never drops.
“She will go after every single ball on the court.”
Quinn added that Martin is going to make an impact at K-State next year.
Playing in the Big 12 Conference was a goal for Martin, who said the small-town atmosphere of Manhattan, Kansas, where the university is located, was gorgeous and reminded her of Downtown McKinney.
She plans on majoring in education and becoming a high school math teacher.
Martin played on the Boyd varsity squad longer than any other player in program history, and she admitted it would be strange not being there any more.
“I've had coach Quinn as my coach for four years, and it's just been a blast,” she said. “It really has helped shape my volleyball life. I don't know what I'd do if I hadn't played for Boyd.”
Moving up to college play, Martin said she's looking forward to a new experience and skill level.
“Something completely different that I haven't seen before,” she said.
