Yard of the month winners announced
Keep Lewisville Beautiful (KLB) recognizes four residential yards during the holidays for their decorations. Signs designating the winners will be displayed for all to see.
Christmas light recycling available locally
Holiday lights contain glass, copper and plastics that can be recovered and then made into new products. Residents can now recycle old, unwanted Christmas lights rather than putting them in the trash to go to the landfill. The Home Depot and Lowe’s will accept old lights at their Lewisville stores.
Another way to recycle holiday lights is to participate in a national mail-back program offered by HolidayLEDs.com. The program offers 25 percent off the purchase of LED Christmas lights (until Jan. 31) when sending in old lights for recycling. More information is available at http://www.holidayleds.com/holidayledscom_christmas_light_recycling_program.
KLB continues tree recycling
Keep Lewisville Beautiful is encouraging everyone this year to recycle their live Christmas tree. Recycling reduces the debris at the curb on trash day, extends the life of our landfill, provides free useful mulch and benefits the environment. Here’s how it works: Purchase a live tree, decorate it and enjoy it for Christmas, after the holidays remove all the ornaments and decorations, take it to the Lake Park and Mill Street location (near the soccer fields, follow the signs) drop it all and collect your mulch. Trees may be dropped off near the soccer field parking lot now through Jan. 15.
The trees will be chipped up to be used as mulch, which saves precious landfill space and we are able to reuse the trees. Any mulch left on site is available to the public free of charge. Starting Dec. 30, bring a bag or bucket to pick up and use in your yard. Mulch can be used in the flowerbeds and boarders, garden beds, around trees and shrubs, walkways, and livestock bedding. We will take residential and commercial trees from lots that don’t sell all their stock.
