New Year’s Eve proved an eventful time for the Maher Awad family.

Christan Awad gave birth to baby girl Aleena Jamilah Awad at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 1, 2011. She was the first baby born to the New Year in Collin County.

Aleena, 20 inches long and weighing 6 pounds, 12.8 ounces, was born at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Plano.

This was the Awad’s second baby at THPHP. The couple lives in Carrollton but chooses Texas Health because it is only a 15-minute drive from their home.

The Awad family now has five children; Aleena joins siblings ages 17, 14, 5 and 3.

Christan called Aleena their surprise because the couple was not expecting any more children. The surprise extended to her experience with her New Year’s baby, whose arrival came with little warning.

With light contractions and family members keeping close watch, Christan still went to work and ate several meals before she actually went into the hospital.

“I refuse to just sit up at the hospital and eat ice chips when she wasn’t ready to come out, so I ate breakfast, then lunch, and even dinner after my water broke,” Christan said. “I had minor contractions, but they were sporadic.”

Christan said she knew, almost to the moment, when each of her other children would be born — but Aleena was a mystery up until the last minute.

“I felt pressure but never had any pain, so I didn’t know,” Christan said. “Right at the last minute, I didn’t know if I could make it or not because the pressure was getting stronger, but she was out right at 12 o’clock.”

Christan said her doctor had to cut the umbilical cord from around Aleena’s neck before she could be all the way out, so she wasn’t actually born until 12:01 a.m.

“She would have been the first one in all of Dallas or Collin County,” Christan said. “It placed her right behind a baby born in Dallas County who was born right at 12.”

The Awads plan on Aleena being the last of the children they have.

“She is truly a blessing,” Christan said.
