Hospital to host Doc Shop
By Chris Roark, Croark@acnpapers.com
It could be described as speed dating in a hospital.
Except you’re looking for a doctor, not a date.
Beginning next week, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound will be hosting a Doc Shop event beginning next week as a way to allow potential patients to find the doctor that best fits their needs.
Each event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the first floor of the hospital, located at 4400 Long Prairie Road.
The first event will take place Tuesday and will feature OB/GYNs, followed by an event March 29 for primary care physicians. Doc Shop will conclude April 14 with pediatricians.
“This event will give us the opportunity to have several doctors in one room,” said Angela Kreig, director of patient support services at the hospital. “We’re going to have participation from three sets of doctors. Those are the three that people shop for the most.”
Kreig said how long potential patients have with the doctors will depend on how many people show up.
She said the hope is to have 15 doctors per specialty.
“My goal is to have 10 doctors per practice,” Kreig said. “I think that would be a good number to choose from.”
Once the first group of 15 residents have completed the cycle, another group of 15 residents will enter the room to meet the doctors.
Kreig said it’s important for residents to spend the short amount of time asking questions that will provide guidance on selecting a doctor and not to get answers to individual health questions.
“They don’t have very long, so we want everyone to use their time to get to know the doctor,” Kreig said.
Topics Kreig recommends asking about include: the doctor’s experience, what the doctor’s office hours are, the doctor’s approach to medicine, the average amount of time the doctor sees a patient and what type of insurance the doctor accepts.
While this is the first time for the Flower Mound hospital to host such an event, Kreig said she got the idea from Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford, which has hosted the event since September 2009.
Mandy Forbus, senior marketing specialist for Texas Health HEB, said Doc Shop was geared toward women to help them meet and interview several OB/GYNs. But she said the concept is applicable to anyone seeking a health care provider.
“It’s so impersonal to pick a health care provider at random off your insurance company’s list or based off a friend’s referral, only to show up and wish you’d been able to pick a doctor who better suited your personality needs,” Forbus said. “With a Doc Shop, it allows potential patients to meet with potential physicians, so they can pick the best match. If you like your doctor, you’re more likely to make/keep appointments and take better care of yourself and your family. Plus, feeling comfortable enough to ask difficult or personal questions only strengthens the patient-physician relationship, which could span a lifetime. Overall, it is a win-win for community members and physicians.”
