LINC Center at risk
By Betty Rutledge, Letter to the Editor
MISD administrators have proposed a plan that includes closing the LINC Center, McKinney's largest high school campus serving at-risk students. MISD school board members will be asked to vote to terminate the LINC Center teachers' positions at Tuesday's board meeting.
Contrary to an article on the Channel 11 blog, MISD has proposed eliminating 65 teacher positions, including those at the LINC Center.
The LINC Center has served over 100 students this year. Since students work at an accelerated pace, many finish their requirements and graduate before the end of the school year.
Over 1000 students have graduated from the LINC Center in its 22-year history, including 199 in the past three years. These students applied to the LINC Center because dropout prevention efforts on their home campuses were not providing the support they needed to remain in school. The closing of the LINC Center would be a resource loss of major proportions to MISD's most at-risk students.
Citizens who are concerned about the closing of the LINC Center can contact any school board member through the district office (469-742-4000) and/or attend the Board meeting Tuesday night at 7:15 p.m.
A concerned retired teacher,
Betty Rutledge
